Relaxing Lullabies for Babies to Sleep - Relaxing Lullaby Music for babies
There isn't a ton of evidence that shows listening whole lullabies really helps newborns get better sleep, despite the fact that it helps them feel protected, secure, and quiet. As for why that is, it's possible that the lullaby's calming effects come from the synchronization of singing and rocking (cue: Rock-a-Bye Baby). Babies learn to identify rocking with the comforting feelings they had while still in the womb. Dr. Harvey Karp recommends the 5 S's for improved sleep, and swinging is one of them. Baby's natural soothing reaction is activated by the rhythmic movement, which acts as a "off switch" for wailing and a "on switch" for relaxing and sleep. While lullabies may be slow and repetitive, they lack the monotony that helps Baby fall asleep quickly and easily.
Calming Sounds for Infants
White noise, which has been scientifically proved to promote sleep, is the ideal "music" for Baby to fall asleep to. For instance, research published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood indicated that white noise was effective in putting eighty percent of infants to sleep within five minutes. Cries from colicky newborns are shorter and they sleep more when white noise is present. White noise does this by recreating the rumbling, booming noises that infants perceive while still in the womb. That's why the 5th S, "shushing" (also known as "white noise"), is so important.
Your baby will sleep better if the white noise you play for him or her is constant, repetitive, and low in pitch, much like the sounds she or he would have heard in the womb. (Wave noises, bird songs, and lullabies don't qualify since they aren't constant.) White noise devices may vary greatly in quality. In fact, many of them don't provide the necessary low rumbly white noise that is so helpful for infants. Try our award-winning SNOO bassinet, our white noise lovey SNOObear, or the downloadable pediatrician-created SNOO sounds for the finest "music" for infant sleep. If you use white noise correctly, your infant will learn to identify it with the joy of sleep within a few of weeks. (It's that familiar noise again...it must be bedtime.) In later infancy, white noise is useful for lulling infants to sleep and ensuring that they remain asleep despite the presence of other noises (such as the TV or a passing vehicle) (teething pain, mild cold).
